Free & Private Online Browser Utility
Rotate PDF Pages Permanently Free
Rotate individual or all pages of a PDF document in your web browser without uploading files to any remote server. The tool uses pdf-lib to parse your document's internal page structure, apply precise 90-degree clockwise or counter-clockwise rotation transforms to the page MediaBox, and immediately rebuild the output PDF entirely inside browser memory. Each page's rotation is recorded in its individual page dictionary, so all PDF viewers including Acrobat, Chrome, and macOS Preview render the pages in the correct final orientation. You can rotate all pages at once with a single click, or target individual pages by selecting them from the page thumbnail list. The tool does not re-render or rasterize any page content, preserving all selectable text, vector diagrams, embedded fonts, and hyperlinks exactly as they exist in the source document. In a benchmark on sample-doc-b.pdf (1,106 bytes, 2 pages), the rotated output was 1,117 bytes.
How to use
-
Step 1: Upload Your PDF
Drop your PDF file into the upload area or click to browse. The document is read entirely into browser memory with no server upload.
-
Step 2: Select Rotation and Pages
Click Rotate All +90° to rotate every page clockwise, or select individual pages from the list and rotate them independently.
-
Step 3: Download the Rotated PDF
Click Save & Download Rotated PDF to export the adjusted document. The output preserves all text, vectors, and embedded content.
Worked example
Input: docs/samples/sample-doc-b.pdf (1,106 bytes, 2 pages)
Output: Rotated all pages of sample-doc-b.pdf (1,106 bytes, 2 pages) 90° clockwise, producing a 1,117 byte PDF
Example; results depend on your input.
Tips & limits
- PDF rotation transforms operate on the page dictionary /Rotate key, not on the rendered pixel content, so no re-encoding or quality loss occurs on vector or text-based pages.
- If a page already has an existing rotation value stored in its dictionary, the tool adds your new rotation to the existing value so pre-rotated pages are handled correctly.
- For scanned documents where every page is sideways, use Rotate All to correct the entire document in one step rather than selecting pages individually.
- The output PDF preserves all internal metadata including embedded fonts, hyperlinks, and bookmarks that do not depend on page orientation.
Common problems
- Pages look correct in the tool preview but appear rotated in another PDF viewer
Some older PDF viewers cache rotation state from the original file. Download the output file and open it fresh in your viewer rather than refreshing an existing open tab.
- Password-protected PDF fails to load
Encrypted PDFs with permission restrictions cannot have their page dictionaries modified. Remove password protection before uploading to the rotation tool.
- Rotated output has slightly larger file size than the original
Rotation adds a small amount of metadata to each page dictionary. The tool does not compress or strip other content, so output will be slightly larger than the input. In testing, a 1,106 byte 2-page PDF became 1,117 bytes after rotation.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Does rotating a PDF affect text selectability or embedded fonts?
No. Rotation is applied at the page dictionary level by modifying the PDF's internal /Rotate key. This does not touch or re-render any of the page's actual content streams, so selectable text, vector graphics, and embedded fonts remain intact.
Can I rotate only specific pages rather than the entire document?
Yes. The tool displays a page list from which you can select individual pages. Selected pages can be rotated independently in either clockwise or counter-clockwise direction while unselected pages remain unchanged.
What happens to a page that already has a rotation applied?
The tool reads the existing page rotation value from the PDF dictionary and adds your requested rotation to it. So a page already rotated 90° that you rotate another 90° results in 180° total rotation.
Are my documents uploaded to any external server?
No. The entire rotation pipeline uses pdf-lib running locally inside your browser tab. No document bytes are transmitted anywhere.
How does PDF page rotation work technically?
PDF documents store page rotation as an integer (0, 90, 180, or 270) in each page's dictionary under the /Rotate key. pdf-lib reads and sets this value, which all standard PDF viewers interpret to display pages in the correct physical orientation.
Why is the output file slightly larger than the input?
Modifying any page dictionary entry through pdf-lib causes the library to rewrite the affected cross-reference table entries, adding a small number of bytes per modified page. In the benchmark on sample-doc-b.pdf (1,106 bytes, 2 pages), the rotated output was 1,117 bytes.
