Split PDF Pages

Extract specific pages or separate multi-page PDF documents directly in your web browser. Built on the open-source pdf-lib library, our client-side splitting engine reads the binary cross-reference tables and page dictionaries of your source document in local memory. You can extract discrete page sequences, isolate odd or even pages, or divide every selected page into individual standalone PDF files bundled in a ZIP archive. All operations run locally inside browser RAM without uploading files to remote servers, preserving total confidentiality for financial statements, legal contracts, and medical records. The tool does not decrypt password-protected PDFs where permissions forbid extraction, does not perform optical character recognition on scanned pages, and does not rasterize or degrade original vector text layers.

How to use

  1. Step 1: Open Your Source PDF Document

Drag and drop your PDF into the upload zone or choose it using your system file picker. The engine immediately parses the document structure and displays the total page count.

  2. Step 2: Specify Pages to Extract

Type custom page numbers and ranges (such as 1-3, 5) or click individual thumbnail tiles. Use the quick presets to select all, odd, or even pages with one click.

  3. Step 3: Choose Split Mode and Download

Select Single PDF to combine your selected pages into one new file, or choose Separate PDFs to export each page as an independent document packaged in a ZIP archive.

Options explained

Single PDF vs Separate PDFs (ZIP)

Determines whether the extracted pages are assembled into a single continuous PDF document or split into individual single-page PDF files.

When to use: Choose Single PDF when extracting a multi-page chapter, contract exhibit, or invoice section. Choose Separate PDFs when you need individual files for separate email attachments or archive folders.

Custom Range Syntax (e.g. 1-2, 4)

Allows entering comma-separated numbers and hyphenated page spans to select non-contiguous pages quickly.

When to use: Ideal for long documents where manual clicking is slow, such as selecting pages 10-15 and 22 from an eighty-page report.

Odd and Even Quick Presets

One-click filter buttons that automatically highlight alternate pages across the document.

When to use: Helpful when re-sorting double-sided scans produced by manual document feeders that scan all front pages followed by all back pages.

Custom Output Filename

Sets the downloaded file name before saving to disk, defaulting to your original document title with a split suffix.

When to use: Use this field to label your extracted records clearly before archiving or forwarding to colleagues.

Worked example

Input: sample-text-doc.pdf — a 5,541-byte vector text document with 5 pages

Output: Extracted pages 1-2 from 5,541-byte 5-page sample-text-doc.pdf into a 2,631-byte two-page PDF; exporting all extracted pages as individual documents produced a 3,585-byte ZIP containing 2 PDF files

Example; results depend on your input.

Tips & limits

  • Because the engine copies low-level PDF page dictionaries directly, all embedded fonts, hyperlinks, and vector shapes remain intact without quality loss.
  • Selecting non-consecutive pages like 1, 3, and 5 preserves your specified numerical order in the generated output document.
  • Invalid non-PDF files are immediately rejected to prevent memory corruption and invalid array buffer allocations.
  • For huge documents exceeding several hundred pages, allow a few seconds for browser memory allocation while pdf-lib parses cross-reference trailers.

Common problems

Error message states the file could not be read as a valid, unprotected PDF

This occurs when the PDF is encrypted with an owner password or uses proprietary DRM restrictions. Remove permissions security before splitting.

Downloaded ZIP file contains fewer pages than expected

Check your page range string to verify that entered numbers do not exceed the document total page count, as out-of-bounds numbers are automatically ignored.

Browser tab slows down when loading an extremely large document

Documents with thousands of pages require significant JavaScript heap memory. Close other resource-heavy browser tabs to free available RAM.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Does splitting a PDF reduce the visual quality of text or embedded diagrams?

No. The pdf-lib engine extracts native page object streams directly at the binary level. It does not recompress or rasterize pages, meaning vector lines, text sharp edges, and embedded photos remain identical to the original.

Can I extract non-contiguous pages like pages 2, 4, and 7 into a single file?

Yes. You can enter comma-separated numbers like 2, 4, 7 in the range box or toggle the corresponding page tiles. The output PDF compiles only those selected pages in ascending order.

Are my sensitive PDF contracts or statements uploaded to any web server?

No. All PDF parsing, page copying, and file serialization occur strictly within your web browser memory thread. Zero bytes of your documents are ever transmitted over the internet.

Can this tool split password-protected PDF documents?

The tool can open PDFs with basic view permissions, but documents encrypted with strict owner passwords that disallow page extraction will be rejected by the security layer.

How does the Separate PDFs mode package the downloaded files?

Separate PDFs mode generates an independent PDF file for each selected page, numbers them sequentially, and bundles them into a single downloadable ZIP file using the JSZip library.

Is there a maximum page limit when splitting documents?

There is no fixed page limit. Because processing relies on available browser RAM, documents containing hundreds of pages process smoothly on modern desktop and laptop systems.

Files never leave your device; calculations and transformations happen locally.
