Compress PDF
Reduce PDF document file size in your web browser without sending files to remote servers. Our dual-engine compressor leverages pdfjs-dist and pdf-lib to analyze the internal structure of your document, targeting high-resolution embedded images that account for the vast majority of document bulk. The tool provides three compression levels and distinct operating modes, including a smart hybrid mode that recompresses heavy photo streams while leaving selectable vector text legible and searchable. Built-in safeguards actively monitor compression progress: if a text-heavy PDF is already optimal, the engine avoids file size inflation instead of artificially swelling your file. The tool does not crack password-protected documents, does not claim lossless compression on re-encoded photographic images, and does not strip necessary vector font outlines.
How to use
-
Step 1: Upload Your Target PDF
Drag your PDF file into the drop area or select it from your device. The client engine reads the document bytes into local browser memory.
-
Step 2: Choose Compression Preset and Mode
Select between Extreme, Recommended (Balanced), or High Quality presets, and pick the processing mode that matches your document type.
-
Step 3: Compress and Save
Click Compress PDF to run the in-memory optimization pipeline, view your real byte reduction metrics, and download the compressed document.
Worked example
Input: docs/samples/sample-image-doc.pdf (452,737 bytes) and docs/samples/sample-text-doc.pdf (5,541 bytes)
Output: Compressed 452,737-byte image-heavy PDF (sample-image-doc.pdf) down to 34,190 bytes at balanced settings, saving 92.4% of document weight; clean vector text PDF (5,541 bytes) triggered safeguard to prevent size inflation
Example; results depend on your input.
Tips & limits
- PDFs composed primarily of vector text and system fonts are already very compact; compressing them further cannot reduce file size significantly.
- The compression engine will not overwrite an embedded image if the recompressed stream fails to save at least 6% of its original byte count.
- For scanned paper documents containing no selectable text, the dedicated Scanned Document mode achieves the highest compression ratios.
- Because all image downsampling and PDF dictionary rebuilding happen in browser memory, your confidential documents are never uploaded to the cloud.
Common problems
- Compression yields 0% reduction or file size stays nearly identical
This occurs with pure vector text documents that contain no high-resolution bitmap images. Pure text cannot be shrunk further without rasterizing and destroying text quality.
- Document text appears slightly soft or blurry after compression
If you used Scanned Document mode, switch to Smart Hybrid or Vector Preserving mode to ensure fonts and vector paths remain untouched.
- Processing halts on an encrypted document
PDFs with security restrictions or password protection cannot have their internal object trees modified. Remove document permissions restrictions before running compression.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Why do some PDF documents compress by 90% while others barely shrink?
Document size reduction depends on internal structure. In tests on three PDFs: a 452,737-byte image-heavy PDF compressed to 34,190 bytes (92.4% reduction), a 1,031,812-byte scanned document to 171,016 bytes (83.4% reduction), and a 39,844-byte graphic album to 14,220 bytes (64.3% reduction). The measured range across these three was 64.3% to 92.4%. PDFs containing only clean vector text and fonts are already lightweight and contain no heavy image streams to compress.
Does compressing a PDF remove selectable text or search functionality?
In Smart Hybrid and Vector Preserving modes, selectable text, copy-paste capabilities, and search indexes remain intact. Only embedded image streams are downsampled and recompressed.
How does the tool prevent small PDF files from becoming larger?
Our pipeline includes a size safeguard that tests output bytes against the input. If downsampling an image does not save measurable bytes, the original stream is retained, preventing file inflation.
Are my confidential legal contracts or bank statements sent to an external server?
No. The entire compression cycle runs locally in your browser memory thread using pdfjs-dist and pdf-lib. Zero document bytes or images are ever transmitted to any remote server.
What is the difference between Extreme and Recommended compression presets?
Recommended compression targets balanced 55% JPEG quality and 1100 pixel bounds, ideal for web viewing and printing. Extreme drops quality to 38% and caps dimensions at 800 pixels for maximum reduction.
Can I compress multi-page documents with over fifty pages?
Yes. The compressor iterates page by page through memory. Processing duration scales with document length and image quantity, comfortably handling multi-page documents on modern hardware.
