Remove EXIF Data: Strip Photo GPS
Remove EXIF metadata, GPS geographic location coordinates, camera profiles, and device timestamps from your photos directly in your web browser. When photographs are captured using smartphones or digital cameras, exchangeable image file format (EXIF) metadata is embedded into the file header. This metadata often includes precise latitude and longitude coordinates, camera serial numbers, lens focal lengths, exposure settings, and capture timestamps. Our client-side sanitizer parses image files using local HTML5 Canvas and FileReader APIs, stripping embedded APP1 segments to protect your location privacy before sharing photos online. The tool does not upload files to remote servers, does not inject watermarks, and does not retain copies of your pictures in cloud storage.
How to use
-
Step 1: Upload Image Files
Drag JPEG, PNG, or WebP files into the sanitizer zone or click to select files from your computer or phone storage.
-
Step 2: Inspect Detected Metadata Tags
Review detected EXIF tags including camera make, device model, exposure parameters, and GPS location coordinates shown in the diagnostics list.
-
Step 3: Download Clean Sanitized Images
Click Download Clean Image to save individual stripped files, or download all sanitized images packaged together in a single ZIP archive.
Worked example
Input: Unsanitized JPEG photo containing EXIF camera tags and GPS coordinates: docs/samples/sample-photo-with-exif.jpg (171,075 bytes, 1376x768).
Output: Stripped EXIF camera and GPS metadata headers from 171,075-byte JPEG (sample-photo-with-exif.jpg), re-encoding image data into a clean 1376x768 JPEG (163,283 bytes at quality 95) with tags removed
Example; results depend on your input.
Tips & limits
- Most social networks strip EXIF data on upload, but direct messaging apps, cloud drives, and email attachments send full raw headers with GPS tags intact.
- Sanitizing images via canvas redraws pixel bitmaps into fresh image Blobs, completely omitting legacy camera markers and editing history.
- To preserve visual clarity on clean exports, the tool re-encodes canvas bitmaps as a lossy JPEG at quality 95.
- If your image has no EXIF data to begin with (such as a computer screenshot or digital drawing), the tool confirms that no metadata segments are present.
Common problems
- Clean image file size differs from the original upload
Re-encoding canvas bitmaps removes header bytes and applies lossy quality 95 compression, altering file weight from 171,075 to 163,283 bytes while keeping 1376x768 pixel dimensions identical.
- Photo orientation rotates unexpectedly after metadata removal
Some cameras store orientation as an EXIF tag rather than rotating raw pixels. The browser canvas normalizes orientation during decode, aligning the export correctly.
- Browser slows down when processing dozens of camera files
Decoding high-resolution camera files requires uncompressed canvas memory. Process large galleries in smaller sequential batches on mobile devices if memory is constrained.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What specific metadata tags does this EXIF remover strip?
The tool removes GPS latitude and longitude coordinates, altitude data, camera manufacturer, camera model, lens serial number, shutter speed, ISO rating, aperture, date and time stamps, and thumbnail preview caches.
Are my personal photos sent to an external server for processing?
No. The entire metadata parsing and removal pipeline executes locally inside your web browser sandbox using JavaScript and HTML5 Canvas. No image data is transmitted across the internet.
Does stripping EXIF data reduce image quality or alter dimensions?
The tool preserves original pixel dimensions (such as 1376x768 on our sample). The image is re-encoded as a lossy JPEG at quality 95, keeping visual clarity intact while omitting header tags.
Can I check whether a photo contains location coordinates before cleaning?
Yes. When you load an image, the diagnostics panel inspects the binary IFD segments and displays detected tags, including camera details and GPS coordinates if present.
