Word Counter: Characters & Reading Time
Count words, characters, sentences, paragraphs, and estimated reading time for any block of text directly inside your browser. The engine uses JavaScript regex to split on whitespace boundaries, strips common stop words to surface keyword density, and estimates reading time at 200 words per minute. All processing runs client-side without sending your text to any server, making it safe for confidential documents, drafts, and private notes.

Worked example
Input: The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. Pack my box with five dozen liquor jugs. How vexingly quick daft zebras jump! (3 sentences)
Output: Words: 23 | Characters (with spaces): 122 | Characters (no spaces): 100 | Sentences: 3
Measured on standard English pangrams using browser JavaScript whitespace tokenization.
Tips & limits
- Sentence count splits on periods, exclamation marks, and question marks — abbreviations like 'Dr.' may add minor variance.
- The reading time estimate assumes a 200 wpm average adult reading speed.
Common problems
- Word count differs from Microsoft Word
Word uses locale-specific tokenisation rules. This tool splits on Unicode whitespace boundaries, which may count hyphenated words or contractions differently.
- Sentence count seems high
The counter splits on '.', '!', and '?' characters. Abbreviations, decimal numbers, and ellipses each add a split. The count is an estimate.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Does the word counter send my text to a server?
No. All counting runs in your browser using JavaScript. Your text is never transmitted over the network.
How is reading time calculated?
Reading time is the word count divided by 200 words per minute, which is a commonly cited average adult reading speed for general prose.
Why does character count vary with or without spaces?
Characters with spaces counts every character including whitespace. Characters without spaces removes all whitespace before counting, matching how some platforms enforce character limits.
Can I count words in languages other than English?
Yes for space-delimited languages such as French, Spanish, and German. Logographic languages like Chinese or Japanese where words are not space-separated will not produce accurate word counts.
