Free & Private Online Browser Utility
JSON Formatter & Validator
Format, beautify, validate, and minify JSON data structures directly in your browser. Built with native ECMAScript JSON parsing and recursive object traversal, our developer workspace formats dense API payloads into clean, readable hierarchies with configurable indentation (2 spaces, 4 spaces, tabs, or single-line minification). The built-in auto-repair engine detects and fixes common syntax mistakes, including single-quoted strings, unquoted keys, comments, and trailing commas. You can sort object keys alphabetically and inspect structural metrics including key counts, nesting depth, and byte weights in real time. Processing runs strictly inside client-side JavaScript memory without transmitting sensitive configuration tokens, database exports, or proprietary payloads across external networks. The tool does not store API credentials, does not truncate large payloads, and does not inject telemetry.
How to use
-
Step 1: Paste Raw JSON or Upload File
Input minified server responses, configuration files, or database exports into the input pane, load a built-in sample, or upload a .json file directly from your disk.
-
Step 2: Configure Indentation and Key Sorting
Select between 2 Spaces, 4 Spaces, Tab, or Minified indentation modes, and optionally choose Alphabetical (A-Z) or Reverse (Z-A) key ordering.
-
Step 3: Auto-Repair Errors and Download
If syntax errors are detected, click Auto-Fix Errors to clean trailing commas and quotes automatically. Copy the formatted result or download as a .json file.
Worked example
Input: docs/samples/sample-data.json (379 bytes) — unformatted JSON structure with 8 keys and 3 nesting levels
Output: Formatted 379 byte JSON data structure into clean 2-space indented hierarchy (378 bytes) and minified compact payload (289 bytes) across 8 keys and depth 3
Example; results depend on your input.
Tips & limits
- RFC 8259 strictly forbids comments; use the Auto-Fix tool to strip developer notes before passing payloads to strict parsers.
- When optimizing web API responses, select the Minified setting to eliminate all whitespace and reduce network payload transfer weights.
- For complex configurations, sorting keys alphabetically makes it much faster to locate specific environment variables and nested credentials.
- Because all serialization routines execute in local browser memory, sensitive production database dumps and API authorization secrets never touch external servers.
Common problems
- JSON Parse Error: Unexpected token in JSON at position X
This usually indicates an unquoted key, single quotes around strings, or a trailing comma. Click the Auto-Fix Errors button to repair standard syntax violations.
- Large JSON file causes browser tab to stutter during pasting
Pasting massive multimegabyte JSON payloads into web textareas can cause DOM reflow delays. Use the Upload .json file button instead of pasting directly into the text field.
- Array item ordering changes unexpectedly after formatting
The key sorting option only alphabetizes dictionary keys within objects; array elements retain their exact index sequence to preserve array semantics.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is the difference between RFC 8259 and older JSON specifications?
RFC 8259 is the official IETF standard for JSON. It mandates UTF-8 encoding without byte order marks and defines strict syntax rules: all object keys and strings must be enclosed in double quotes, numbers must follow standard decimal formatting, and trailing commas are strictly forbidden.
Why does JSON.parse() fail on valid JavaScript object literals?
JavaScript objects permit single quotes, unquoted keys like {name: 'val'}, trailing commas, and inline comments. JSON is a strict data interchange format and forbids all of these. Our Auto-Fix engine bridges this gap by transforming loose JavaScript objects into valid JSON.
Are my database exports or confidential API keys sent to any external server?
No. The entire formatting and repair pipeline runs locally in your web browser using client-side JavaScript. No payload data, configuration secrets, or statistics are transmitted over the network.
How does minifying JSON improve application network performance?
Minification removes unnecessary spaces, line breaks, and indentation tabs from the text payload. On our 379-byte sample JSON, minification reduced uncompressed size to 289 bytes (a 23.7% reduction) before gzip or brotli compression.
Can I format JSON files larger than 10 megabytes in this tool?
Yes. Modern browser JavaScript engines comfortably parse multi-megabyte payloads in RAM. For optimal responsiveness with massive files, load the file using the Upload button rather than copying and pasting.
Does key sorting alter the underlying data or meaning of the JSON?
Under the JSON specification, key ordering within objects is mathematically unordered, meaning sorting keys does not alter data semantics. However, array ordering is preserved because array indexes are strictly ordered.
